Grief and Loss

All of us at some point experience loss and grief.  Many of us associate it with losing a loved one through death or divorce, but we also experience it when we lose a job, a friendship, or when children move out.  There are a variety of circumstances that trigger grief:  selling the family home, declining health, the aging process, retirement, graduating high school or college, not being able to achieve our goals, or financial hardship may all bring feelings of grief and loss.  It’s a natural emotion and we each experience it in different ways.

Part of the grieving process is learning to make sense of what happened, feel your feelings, find ways to cope, and eventually pick up the pieces and move forward.  Grief can present itself in many ways:  sadness, anger, guilt, denial, and regret are common emotions as part of the grieving process, and having a safe space to explore them in therapy can aid in recovery.
